Your Hyundai Ioniq 6 won’t unlock, light up, or take a start. Treat that dark cabin as a 12-volt failure first. The traction pack can still hold unused miles. A week in a PortMiami garage is enough to drain the small battery. An unplugged condo stall does the same thing overnight.
A silent Ioniq 6 is usually the 12-volt
The start button does nothing, and the cluster stays black. The fob feels ignored, and the handles don’t pull. That’s the auxiliary battery, not a pack at zero. This sedan still needs 12-volt power to close the high-voltage contactors. No 12-volt means no boot, even with range left.
Hyundai’s E-GMP cars split the work across two batteries. The large pack turns the motors on the road. The small pack feeds locks, windows, lights, and infotainment. It also feeds the network those modules use. When the 12-volt unit is empty, the traction system stays locked out.
There’s a second trap after a low traction state. The battery management system can stop topping off the 12-volt. Then the sedan sits for a few quiet days. The auxiliary battery goes empty while you still remember a partial charge. The car won’t wake until that small battery has power again.
The same cascade is in When an EV’s 12-volt battery dies in this climate. Read it if you want the system view before you pull trim.
Heat here ages the small battery, not hills
South Florida is flat, so range isn’t a grade story. Miami-Dade’s Atlantic Coastal Ridge tops out around 23 to 24 feet. Broward’s Pine Island Ridge sits at about 29 feet. What you feel in summer is heat, air conditioning, and dwell.
NWS Miami normals for 1991-2020 put July and August highs at 91F. A normal year brings about 64 days at or above 90F. Lead-acid 12-volt batteries take that heat personally. Battery University’s published rule is blunt on aging. Every rise of about 15F halves lead-acid life. Aging runs about twice as fast at 93F as at 77F. It runs about four times as fast at 111F. Heat damage doesn’t reverse after a cool night. A parked Ioniq 6 in this climate is already working that 12-volt hard.
Cruise decks and airport garages: the brick when you return
A car left for a week or two comes back dead from 12-volt drain. Those cabin systems stayed alive the whole time. The main pack usually isn’t sitting at empty. That’s the PortMiami and MIA parking call. It’s usually a jump, not a flatbed.
PortMiami cruise parking uses northside Garages A, AA, B, C, D, F, and G. Southside Garages J and K sit with surface Lot E. You leave for the ship and come back to a mute sedan. Walk the 12-volt checks in that aisle before you authorize a wrecker. Confirm current lot rules on Miami-Dade’s PortMiami parking page. This page won’t guess a parking rate for you.
Miami International Airport has the same long-stay pattern. The Dolphin Garage serves MIA’s North Terminal. The Flamingo Garage serves MIA’s Central Terminal. The airport page says the Ibis Garage holds ChargePoint ports across its levels. Park 6 is the new long-term garage, opened summer 2026. The airport page lists EV charging on site there. The off-airport Park and Ride sits at 1350 NW 45 Ave. If the Ioniq 6 sat through a long trip, assume 12-volt first.
Tesla owners see the same dead car after a trip. Tesla 12V failure after parking: why the car looks totally dead covers that pattern. Your Ioniq 6 still uses different jump points. The heat and dwell are the same physics.
Condo stalls that never see a cord
Many Ioniq 6 drivers here park in a stall with no plug. Older housing is the reason, not a mystery about public sites. Census ACS 2019-2023 figures show older stock where a home charger often isn’t installable. North Miami is 82.7% pre-1980, and Miami Springs is 89.5%. Golden Glades is 83.6%, and West Little River is 82.0%. Hollywood is 74.7%, Lauderhill is 67.3%, and Hialeah is 60.1%. The sedan then sits unplugged between public sessions.
FPL serves essentially all of Miami-Dade and all of Broward. There’s one confirmed exception, and that’s Homestead. Homestead Public Services Energy covers parts of that city, and FPL covers other parts. Confirm your street on the city’s homesteadfl.gov energy page. FPL EVolution Home is the residential Level 2 install-and-maintain program. If your association won’t allow that work, you live on public plugs. Overnight rest still draws on the 12-volt. The 12-volt still supports alarms and telematics while the car sleeps. A weak unit fails on a weekday morning in a gated garage.
Doral, Parkland, and Weston have much newer housing stock. A home circuit is more often possible there. Heat still kills 12-volt batteries in those garages.
The trunk battery and the hood jump points
People copy Ioniq 5 advice onto the 6 and waste time. On the Ioniq 5 crossover, the 12-volt lives up front. On the Ioniq 6 sedan, it lives in the trunk. Look on the driver’s side under the cargo floor liner and a trim panel. It’s an AGM battery, meaning absorbed glass mat.
Don’t put jumper clamps on those trunk posts. The designed jump points are under the hood. The hood still opens, even with no frunk. Use the interior hood release, then find the driver’s-side fuse box. Lift the red cap for the positive post. Find an unpainted chassis bolt for the negative. Never ground on the trunk battery’s negative post.
Keep this map in your phone notes:
- Trunk, driver’s side: the real 12-volt AGM
- Driver’s-side fuse box under the hood: positive jump post, red cap
- Engine bay: bare metal chassis bolt for ground
- Instrument cluster, when the car is alive: auxiliary battery save
If your household also runs the crossover, use the sibling guide. Hyundai Ioniq 5 won’t start? Check the 12V before the pack is the crossover layout.
Checks to run in the garage aisle
Get in first if the fob is dead. Slide the mechanical key out of the fob and use the door. Once you’re in the cabin, pull the hood release. Leave the trunk liner in place until you need to inspect the AGM. Jumping happens in the bay, not on the trunk posts.
Connect the red clamp to the under-hood positive post. Connect black to clean, unpainted metal on the chassis. A stout bolt on the firewall or a strut tower is the usual ground. If a second car is helping, match positive to positive and negative to negative. That donor car should already be running first. A portable jump pack uses the same two Ioniq 6 points.
Wait two to three minutes, then try start. The boot can lag after a dead 12-volt. If the cluster wakes and Ready appears, drive to a charger when you can. A depleted AGM won’t heal from one jump. If it dies again within an hour, plan on replacement, not another jump. How to jump start an electric car without frying the 12V walks through clamp order. EV 12V replacement: signs, timing, and what to do stranded is the next read. It covers a 12-volt that won’t hold a charge.
Stop if nothing changes on the cluster at all. Don’t keep hitting start on a black screen. Don’t clamp onto painted brackets or plastic covers.
Auxiliary battery save is for the wait, not the brick
The Ioniq 6 can limit 12-volt draw while you sit with accessories on. That’s with the motors off and the screens still awake. Auxiliary battery save lives in the cluster settings. The Ioniq 5 doesn’t present it in the same form. It won’t resurrect a battery that’s already dead. It’s insurance before a long wait with the cabin powered.
Use it during a long pickup at MIA. Use it after a Heat game at Kaseya Center. Use it while a Marlins crowd clears loanDepot park. Typical menu path is Settings, then Vehicle, then Auxiliary Battery. Trim level and firmware can move the label. Set that mode while the car still responds.
Shoulder rules if you died on the road
If the Ioniq 6 quit on a highway, get off the travel lane. Move it out of traffic if you still can. Florida Statute 316.194 covers stopping on a highway outside a municipality. The vehicle should sit off the main-traveled part where practicable. Leave room for passing traffic to get by. Leave a clear view from 200 feet each way. Statute 316.194(2) exempts a genuinely disabled vehicle that can’t practicably be moved.
Call *FHP, which is *347, from your mobile phone. Florida Highway Patrol takes disabled-motorist reports on that code. The Road Ranger Service Patrol is FDOT’s free highway service. Rangers jump-start vehicles, do minor repairs, and change flats. They also tow a disabled vehicle from the travel lanes. They move it to the nearest safe location, free of charge. District 6 covers Miami-Dade on I-95, 95 Express, I-195, and I-395. It also covers I-75, 75 Express, and SR-826, the Palmetto. District 4 covers Broward’s I-95 from the Miami-Dade line north. It also covers listed portions of I-595 and I-75. Road Ranger pages don’t mention electric vehicles or EV charging. They still jump a 12-volt, and they still move a dead car. A Level 2 charge is what independent mobile operators bring.
What the referral line can send
Charge Pro MIA matches stranded EV drivers with independent local mobile rescue operators. It doesn’t perform the rescue work itself. It holds no license, owns no trucks, and sets no prices. The operator quotes you before starting and bills you directly. The pros the line connects you with are licensed and insured.
Tell the operator you drive an Ioniq 6 that won’t boot. If it’s the 12-volt, they can jump or replace that battery on site. If the traction pack is actually low, they bring a 240V Level 2 source. CCS or J1772 adapters cover Hyundai and other non-Tesla plugs. That typically adds 10 to 20 miles of range. That charging time is 15 to 30 minutes. That window is charging time, not arrival.
The non-Tesla EV rescue page covers Hyundai too. The Miami EV roadside guide covers a stall in the core. Restore 12-volt power in the stall when you can. Tow if the car still won’t move at all.
If the sedan is still dark after these checks, call (786) 963-2995. You’ll get a quote from the operator before any work starts.
How do you jump-start a Hyundai Ioniq 6?
Use the positive post under the hood, not the trunk battery. Put the red clamp on the fuse-box terminal under the red cap. Put the black clamp on a bare chassis bolt. Wait two to three minutes, then try start. The AGM still lives in the trunk. The jump points aren’t in that trunk.
Where is the 12V battery in a Hyundai Ioniq 6?
It sits in the trunk on the driver’s side, under the cargo floor trim. That’s the opposite of the Ioniq 5 layout. Jump from the engine bay anyway on this sedan.
Can a Hyundai Ioniq 6 die with charge left in the pack?
It can, and that’s the usual trap. A dead 12-volt battery kills power to the computers that wake the high-voltage system. The traction pack can still hold unused energy. The car can’t use it until 12-volt power returns.
