You locked the cable in a Sunny Isles Beach garage before bed. Morning still shows last night’s percent. The stall still shows a ready light, and nothing moved. An EV plugged in but didn’t charge overnight is often a 12V puzzle here, not a dead pack. Condo towers share FPL outlets. Heat cooks the little battery that has to wake the charging computer.

The pack can be fine while the car never woke

The big battery under the floor stores the miles. A small 12-volt battery runs the computers that start a charge. If the 12V is weak, the cable can sit locked all night and the screens still look normal.

South Florida heat is why that little battery fails early. Lead-acid 12V life drops by about half with every 15F rise. At 93F it ages about twice as fast as at 77F. At 111F it’s about four times as fast. That wear doesn’t heal. NWS Miami 1991 to 2020 normals put the July and August average high at 91F. A normal year brings about 64 days at or above 90F.

This metro is flat, so overnight trouble isn’t a grade story. It’s heat, and how long the 12V sat working. Read what happens when an EV’s 12-volt battery dies in this climate.

The same drain shows up after a week at Miami International. A car that sat in the Dolphin, Flamingo, Ibis, or Park 6 garage can wake up silent with a full pack. That’s a 12V, not an empty high-voltage battery. Tesla 12V failure after parking walks the airport version.

Condo towers share an FPL outlet you don’t control

Miami Beach is its own city, reached only by causeway. Sunny Isles Beach, Surfside, Aventura, Hallandale Beach, and Brickell stack parking the same way. You share a pedestal, and you don’t own the circuit. A night that added no miles can be the stall, the car, or the 12V.

Florida Power and Light serves essentially all of Miami-Dade and all of Broward. Homestead is the confirmed exception. Some Homestead streets sit on Homestead Public Services Energy. Other blocks stay on FPL. Confirm the street on the city’s HPS Energy page. No EV-specific program showed on those pages when they were read. Treat that as an observed absence, not proof that none exists.

FPL lists a residential Time-of-Use rate for home charging. Ask FPL for the live tariff. This page doesn’t publish rate numbers. Cars set to that window hold charging on purpose. If you left before the window opened, the car waited. Check scheduled charging, departure, or off-peak in the app before you blame the hardware.

FPL EVolution Home is the residential Level 2 install-and-maintain program. Confirm current terms with FPL. FPL EVolution Make-Ready Credit is the commercial and multifamily path. A condo board can ask FPL about that. Charge Pro MIA doesn’t run those programs.

Housing age decides whether you even have a private plug. North Miami is 82.7 percent pre-1980. Miami Springs is 89.5 percent, Hollywood is 74.7 percent, and Hialeah is 60.1 percent. A wall charger often isn’t installable in that stock. Doral is 5.5 percent pre-1980, Parkland is 1.7 percent, and Weston is 7.0 percent. Newer west-side houses are where overnight Level 2 is common. A Weston driveway and a Sunny Isles stacked garage are different overnight jobs. Kendall is a census-designated place, not a city.

Tower drivers still on a 120-volt outlet should start here. See what a Level 1 EV charger is, and why condo drivers outgrow it. A slow overnight trickle can leave you low even when the session ran. That isn’t the same as a session that never started.

Walk the car before you assume the charger died

Start with the screen, not the wall box. Open the app and the center display. Look for a scheduled window that never opened, or a charge limit you already hit. A car that sat at your set limit all night did what you asked.

Then wake the car. Open and close a door, unlock with the fob, or start climate from the app. Some EVs drop into a low-power sleep if they sit plugged in for hours before a window. A wake that starts charging a few minutes later points to sleep, not a broken wall unit.

Reseat the cable until it clicks. Shared garage cords get tugged when neighbors park. A ready light on the pedestal with a blank car screen is often a loose latch.

Read the wall unit’s own status light. A fault-colored light points to the building hardware. That’s a licensed electrician, not a mobile charge. We don’t repair wall boxes, and we don’t hold a trade license.

Check the breaker or GFCI once. If it trips again, stop. Repeated trips mean a real fault on the circuit. Why your EV charger keeps popping the circuit breaker covers that electrical side.

If settings were open all night and the car still didn’t charge, treat the 12V as the next check. A weak 12V can start a session, then drop it quietly. Jumping it may wake the computers. If it dies again after a jump, the battery is done.

When morning leaves you short of the causeway

A partial overnight charge may cover a short hop in Coral Gables or Doral. It may not cover a causeway run, the Palmetto, or the stretch toward Homestead. Get off a travel lane if you can. Florida Statute 316.194 lets a truly disabled vehicle stay put when it can’t move off the road.

The Road Ranger Service Patrol is Florida’s free highway service patrol, run by FDOT. Dial *FHP (*347) from a mobile phone. Rangers jump-start vehicles and tow a disabled car from the travel lanes to the nearest safe spot. Their published material doesn’t mention EV charging. A Level 2 top-up isn’t what they bring. A 12V jump still is.

Charge Pro MIA matches stranded EV drivers with independent local mobile rescue operators. We perform no work, own no trucks, employ no technicians, and set no prices. The operator quotes you before starting and bills you directly. The pros we connect you with are licensed and insured.

Those operators bring a 240V Level 2 source to the car. That’s a native NACS plug, plus CCS or J1772 adapters for non-Tesla EVs. It typically adds 10 to 20 miles of range in 15 to 30 minutes of charging. That’s charging time, never an arrival time. They can also jump or replace a dead 12V on site.

If the pack is already thin, read your EV is running low: what to do before you’re stuck. If you need a charge brought to the stall, start with mobile EV charging. A wall box that failed overnight is a different job from a car that won’t take power. Home charger failed: who installs, and what you do tonight splits those two.

Call (786) 963-2995 if the overnight plug left you without enough miles.

Frequently asked questions

Why did the car say charging if the percent never moved?

The display can show connected while a scheduled FPL off-peak window hasn’t opened yet. A charge limit you already hit looks the same. Check the app’s schedule and the limit slider first.

Does sitting plugged in without drawing power hurt the pack?

No, the software is choosing not to pull current yet. A closed window, a sleep state, or a met limit isn’t extra wear on the cells.

What if I have to leave and the car barely charged?

Don’t gamble on a thin pack across a causeway. A 12V jump may wake the computers. A mobile Level 2 top-up can add enough miles to reach a plug you control.
